Versailles (in French Versailles) is a small city 19 km south west of Paris and the 43rd largest city of France. It is the capital (Prefecture) of the Departement Yvelines. The city is sourrounded by forests and the spectecular Parc of the Versailes Castle. Versailles is divided into 3 cantons. The roots Versailles go back to 1038 when the name of the village was mentioned the first time. In 1610 Henry de Gondi invites the joung king Louis XIII to hunt in the forest of Versailles. In 1622 King Louis XIII decides to buy some land in Versailles to organise his own hunt, followed by the construction of a "Gentleman´s Chateau" . Two decades later in 1661 the following King Louis XIV asked the the Landscape Designer Le Notre and the Architect Le Vau to transform his fathers castle. On May 6 1682 the Court and Government of France were permanently established in Versailles. Today the Chateau de Versailles is of the World´s major Tourist attractions. The Hall of Mirrors (Galerie des Glaces) designed by Jules Hardouin Mansart containes 357 mirrors. The Galerie de Batailles host prestigeos receptions like the Charity Gala for Lebanon organised by Prince Edouard de Lobkowicz and his wife Princess Francoise de Bourbon The Gardens cover 800 hectars. They contain the Grand Trianon and the Petit Trianon. There are 55 water Bassins like the Bassin dÁppolon or the Bassin de Latone and 372 statues. |
