Turin is the 4th largest city of Italy, the 28th largest city of Europe and the xxth largest city of the World. It is the capital of the Piedmont Region.  The city is in the south of the Alps and in the north of the hills of Monferrato. Four rivers pass by the city among them the most important is the Po. The smaller rivers are the Dora Riparia, the Stura di Lanzo and the Sangone. Turin is divided into x districts. According to the legend, the city was founded in I8 BC as "Castra Tauriniruma" a Roman Military Camp. After the end of the Roman Empire the city was conquered by the Lombards and then the Franks. In 942 the Countship of Turin was founded. At the end of the I§ century the city was annexed by the Duchy of Savoy whose capital it became in I563. In I86I the city became the capital of the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Italy. It remained capital or 4 years only. In I899 Turin became industrialised with the creation of FIAT (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) 7 years later Lancia followed  Turin is the home of the car manufacturers Fiat and Lancia |
