Lourdes (in French Lourdes) is a small town near the Pyrenees Alps in France. Visited by over 5 million people it is the 2nd most visited city of France. February 11 1858 the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a little girl from the town. 6 years later was erected a statue of the virgin. Over the time Lourdes has become one of the world´s leading Marian Shrines. The city has become a place for mass pilgrimages. The spring water from the grotto is beleived to have some healing properties. The Roman Catholic Church has recognised 68 miracle healings.
