Vienna
Subway system
Wiener U Bahn
Vienna's
metro system actually starts with Kaiser Franz Josef
back in the last century when a first urban steam rail line was built to connect
his city residence with his summer palace at Schönbrunn.
Three Stadtbahn lines were opened in 1898 and many stations were designed by
Otto Wagner, the outstanding Jugendstil architect.
From these lines today's U4 and the central section of U6 are maintained, whereas
the third, a more suburban line was reopened in the 80's as an S-Bahn-line (S45)
. The first two lines were electrified in I925 and operated as a tram on independent
right-of-way, either elevated or in an open tunnel along the Danube and Wien
rivers.
